- Mementos and Memories was written during the 2019 July short story challenge. The idea was to write a short story per day in July 2019.
- The inspiration for Mementos and Memories was the backcover blurb of a Jack Reacher novel, The Midnight Line by Lee Child, of all things. According to the blurb, Jack Reacher spots a West Point class ring in the window of a pawn shop and sets out to locate the owner, because no one would ever willingly give up such a ring. When I read the blurb, I thought, “Wow, this would be a great plot for an In Love and War story.”
- I haven’t read The Midnight Line, so I have no idea what Lee Child did with the basic idea, though I suspect that it’s a lot more violent than my rather low-key In Love and War adventure.
- The planet Sentosa is named after an island off the Singapore coast, which is an entertainment and pleasure resort that I visited as a kid. Decades later, the island briefly came to international fame as the site of the summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un.
- Kota Terapung means “floating city” in Malaysian.
- The cover is once again stock art by the talented Thai artist Tithi Luadthong a.k.a. Grandfailure.
