Poverty Porn

Regarding the subject of class prejudice as expressed in reality shows in the UK (and not just there), the Guardian has two articles about yet another show of that type, The Scheme, a reality show set on a Scottish council estate with the usual assortment of grotesque characters.

What sets The Scheme apart from many other shows of that type is that it apparently was controversial from the start and that it enraged many people in Scotland who did not want to be associated with the sort of caricatures depicted in the show.

I rather like the term “poverty porn” for that sort of program, by the way. It describes the appeal of that sort of program so accurately.
