Because this question keeps popping up on writers forums and the like, here is a handy flowchart to answer the question “Is my book a romance?”

It does help and it doesn’t… What if in a short story the romance is central to the story and the couple together at the end but the story only follows the woman main character? What if the main conflict of the story is more along the lines of “I refuse to marry” instead of “will the two get each other”? Is that still a romance short story?
Sounds more like women’s fiction to me, because it’s a heroine’s journey sort of book. In a romance, you generally expect both characters to grow and develop. But I don’t think it would be a disaster to call it romance.
Thanks for the info.
